U8’s Match Report

Gorey Blitz Nov.11th 2006

The Under 8’s had a great turnout for the blitz in Gorey on Saturday last.
We were able to field 3 teams based on experience and ability.
The C team narrowly lost to gorey C by 6 tries to 5, a very close match with an all round good performance of many new comers including Scott McKeown and David Corcoran.
In their second match against Kilkenny C they came up against very strong opposition only managing 2 tries due to a great individual performance by Phillip Rawson.
The B team were worthy winners 5 tries to 3 against Gorey B with superb tries from Peter Barry and great tackling from all, in particular Killian Dean, James Crotty and Barry Ryan.
However they came up against a very strong Kilkenny B team and lost 6 tries to 2. There were impressive performances from Craig Symes, Eoin O Brien and Robert Cullen.
Our A team were very unlucky against a plucky Gorey team who sneaked it 6 tries to 5. Wexford had one try disallowed for touching down over the end line and were unlucky not to get at least a draw. There was superb tackling all round in particular from Josh Nolan-Christie, Daniel Murphy and Darragh Sinnott.
They next came up against the unbeaten Kilkenny A team and played a very physical and tight match. The sides were scoreless at half time due to strong tackling and superb teamwork. In the second half Kilkenny piled on the pressure but Wexford players such as Richard Ryan, Cormac Burke and Stephen Doyle refused to give ground to a very organised and strong opposition.
The team effort on the day was outstanding and was eventually awarded with a magnificent breakaway try by Alex Ryan in the corner. Kilkenny ran out of time to equalise as all the team made their tackles and held the line. It was a superb performance and a credit to all involved in the under 8’s. Coaches Kate Wilson,Leo Burke,Ed Rogers,Jim Ryan and James O’Connor (Snr.) deserve immense praise indeed.

Wexford Blitz.Dec.th 2006

The Under 8’s had a terrific turnout last Saturday as they hosted Wicklow at home.
Wexford played 4 matches ensuring everyone got a game and came out the better overall.
There was particularly good performances from Adam Cantwell, Shane Paarl, Michael Codd and Marcus Harrington as they all managed to score some great tries.
Newcomers such as Paul Curtis, Kealin McCormack and Paul Maitland showed great improvement while special mention must go to Callum Quirke and Eoin O Leary who scored some wonderful individual tries on the day.
Wexford put in some great tackles when under pressure especially Lorcan Leacy, Craig Symes and Robert Cullen.
The under 8 coaches would like to thank all those parents who gave their support on the day and would especially like to thank all the squad who turned out and played so well for Wexford Wanderers last Saturday.

Enniscorthy Blitz Jan.28th 2007
The Under 8’s had great success at the recent Enniscorthy Blitz.
The mini team made up of newcomers showed great improvement and pluck. Although beaten 8 tries to 4 by New Ross in their first game they turned it around in their second match and ran out comfortable winners by 8 tries to 4. There was outstanding play by Tadgh Cleary who made and scored a bagful of tries on the day. Kealan McCormack, Evan Ryan and Paul Curtis also bagged a couple.
In their last match they beat Enniscorthy by 3 tries to 1 thanks to great tackling by BenMcGuinness, Paul Melinn and Scott McKeown.
The B team won against Enniscorthy 6 tries to 2 with great individual performances by Adam Cantwell, Eoin o Leary and Philip Rawson. Their second match against New Ross was a much tighter affair and relied on good tackling from Callum Quirke, Barry Ryan, Lorcan Leacy and James Crotty to keep us in the game. Wexford eventually clinched it 5 tries to 4 with a the winning try scored by Shane Parle .
The A team demolished New Ross in their first match. It was a fantastic team effort with great tries scored by Alex Ryan, Josh Nolan-Christie and Daniel Murphy.
In their second match they came up against a very organised and strong Enniscorthy team. Robert Cullen, Richard Ryan, Darragh Sinnott and Cormac Burke ran their hearts out trying to keep Wexford in the match. The second half performance by Wexford was superb, although down by 2 tries they managed to rally and win the game with ease by 7 tries to 5.

Wexford Wanderers RFC…0 Gorey…22
Wexford came second best to a very good Gorey side on Sat morning in Park Lane in their second friendly of the season.A lot of this squad are stepping up to the full pitch game this season and will take awhile to gain the experience necessary. Along with a good contingent of new players this squad will develop as the season progresses.Gorey displayed excellent ball retention skills which had Wexford on the back foot for most of the match. The 22-0 scoreline somewhat flatters the Gorey lads as 12 of them came in the last 5 mins.Wexford had good performances from Marco Pons,Johnny Craiciun,Simon O’Carroll,Dylan Joyce-Ahearne,Stuart Brennan and Ronan Fitzpatrick.

U16 Match Report

Wicklow 19 Wexford Wanderers 21

Wexford Wanderers under sixteens travelled to Wicklow last Saturday to play the reigning Leinster Champions in the South East Spring league. In an exciting opening sequence, Wexford took the game to Wicklow and were rewarded with a fine try from Niall Stenning after five minutes, which was converted by Michael O’Regan. Wicklow were stung by this early score and came back at the Wexford boys with some innovative play. The Wexford boys defended their line well but could do little to stop the Wicklow rolling maul and the scores were soon level. Wicklow scored again shortly after to give them a 14 to 7 lead to which they added another quick try to make it 19 to 7. Wexford as in the previous weeks game against Enniscorthy kept their composure and came back strongly at their opponents. They were soon to be rewarded following a bullocking run by centre, Cory Carty, who touched down near the posts. Michael O’Regan converted to leave the score at 19 to 14 for Wicklow at half time.Wexford started the second half the stronger and their superior fitness soon began to show.

Play moved from end to end with both teams committing everything in both attack and defence. Wexford came close on a number of occasions only to be frustrated by the whistle and by a Wicklow side intent on defending their unbeaten record. It took a moment of brilliance by Wexford fullback, Barry McGuinness, in the last minutes of normal time to break the deadlock. Taking the ball deep in his own half Barry beat three defenders with his blistering pace, dummied the Wicklow fullback to go over under the posts for a try that was again converted by Michael O’Regan. Wexford hung on their lead, despite concerted Wicklow pressure, for a very deserved win.The hope now is that Wexford can bring this level of performance into their Leinster League semi-final clash with Edenderry next Saturday, 3 February 2007, in Tullow. All support from parent and friends would be welcome for what should be a very entertaining game.
